Editor-in-Residence

Dawn Shamp

Novelist and editor Dawn Shamp returns to Table Rock as editor-in-residence for our 2019 workshop to assist prose writers. As a complement to the work you do in the workshops, participants can schedule time with Dawn for a one-on-one conversation, to discuss the niggling specific or general issues that all of us, as writers, confront in meeting our goals.

Table Rock prose writers may schedule Dawn, in advance, for personalized focus sessions at the workshop, for an additional $150. When you choose this option, you will receive a one-on-one, 30-minute manuscript evaluation from Dawn during the workshop, based on her pre-workshop evaluation of your submitted work. This allows Dawn to provide in-depth editorial focus and detailed feedback, including structural and technical advice, to help you carry your work to completion.

If you'd like to sign up for this first-come, first-served opportunity for a session with Dawn at Table Rock, please note it on your registration form. Once your space is confirmed, you'll be able to send Dawn up to 20 hardcopy double-spaced pages (flat, not folded, please), printed in 12-point font, with one-inch margins. Send your manuscript and a check for $150 payable to Dawn Shamp no later than July 30, 2020, to:

Dawn Shamp is an accomplished writer and editor. Yet she stifles accolades. In her words, "it's not such-a-much." She hews to a firm belief that she, and everyone she works with, will always be surprised and nurtured by unexpected literary encounters. That grounding, that humble respect for literary excellence, from any quarter, has endeared her to a wide range of peers and clients.

A native of Roxboro, NC, Dawn earned an MFA in creative writing from Spalding University in Louisville, KY. Beyond the awards she has received for her writing, Dawn feels she got her most significant career boosts from peers and mentors, including those grounded in the NC Writers' Network, the Durham Arts Council, and the Sewanee Writers' Conference. All of it led to the opportunity to complete her novel as a fellow at the Vermont Studio Center. She lives with her writer husband, Jim, in Durham. When Dawn is not editing, she's working on her next endeavor--and preparing for the wonderful experience that comes every year at Table Rock.
