His credentials speak for themselves and it is a great honor to welcome Robin back to North Carolina to teach for Table Rock again. Robin Hemley is the author of 13 books of nonfiction and fiction, and is the Founder of NonfictioNOW, the world’s leading international conference in nonfiction. A graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop, he returned to Iowa for nine years, to direct the Nonfiction Writing Program. A Contributing Editor to The Iowa Review and on the Advisory Board of Fourth Genre, he has many years publishing experience, including five years as the Editor of The Bellingham Review, where he founded The Annie Dillard Award in Nonfiction and The Tobias Wolff Award in Fiction.
Among his numerous awards for writing, Robin earned fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, three Pushcart Prizes in both fiction and nonfiction, The Independent Press Book Award for Nonfiction, an Editor’s Choice Award from The American Library Association, . His work has been published in the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany, the Philippines, Singapore, Iceland, and elsewhere. His most recent book is HOW TO CHANGE HISTORY: A SALVAGE PROJECT.
Using a combination of writing prompts, craft dsscussions, and pointers on how to capture experience on the page while remaining respectful to your subjects, Robin will unpack his years of writing experience and share the ways in which he has tackled complex subjects in creative non-fiction and fiction.
Participants are encouraged to read Robin's latest book, How to Change History, in advance of the class with an eye toward scene, characters, and structure and to be prepared with questions that are relevant to your own writing project. Beginning and seasoned writers are welcome for this rare chance to study with one of the best known and respected writers among his teaching peers.
